An infomercial loops endlessly as the man and woman giggle, grunt, and sleep. Projection emanates through the television, animating and casting a spotlight on the mummified figures. Living Room #2: The Diorama offers another perspective to the life-sized rendering. Inside the diorama, two miniature figures sit in wheelchairs, facing a miniature television set. Windows show projected images of the outdoors and a man walking a distant path. Projection emanates through the television, and projected faces of the miniature figures can be seen through a small mirror. Living Room was shown at Fountain New York in 2009 and D.U.M.B.O. Art Under the Bridge Festival in 2006. In her fourth exhibition with Fountain Art Fair, Berkoy installs a collection of large-scale video sculptures and smaller media objects throughout the once sunken ship. Navigating a labyrinth of rooms and corridors, descending deeper into the belly of the lightship, viewers encounter a series of scenes and spectacles set against the detritus of the ship’s storied past. Life-sized dummies come to life, and curiosities offer themselves to a world operating just below consciousness. Two life-sized children figures sit at a small table, giggling and grunting intermittently, their faces animated through video projection. The children’s torsos are thickly covered in threading, wrapped like spider’s prey. A television in front of the table appears to be playing, emanating sounds of today’s news. Inside the television set, hidden from view, lies a projector animating the figures. A life-sized mother figure hangs suspended from a corner of the ceiling, also wrapped like spider’s prey and caught in an intricate web. Her face is animated through video projection. She hangs over the children, staring and expressionless. They all wait for breakfast. The faces convulse rhythmically, creating a bizarre and “alive” wall of video wallpaper. On the same wall are hung several framed video portraits of the same woman, wobulating along with the chorus of faces. The same woman displayed in wallpaper pattern finds herself In a Box as a life-sized three-dimensional figure. Sitting in a large cardboard box and wrapped in blankets, the woman appears to stare at a television and watch an infomercial loop endlessly. Animated through projection, her facial expressions and grunts repeat in monotonous and jarring rhythm. The Wobbly series was created, in part, while in residence at The Experimental Television Center, with the help of the infamous video synthesizer, the Paik-Abe Raster Scan Device (aka the Wobulator).
